Liverpool Reads 'Holes' Launch Press Release

Whilst waiting for a bus, you discover that everyone waiting with you has recently read the same book, leaving young and old with something to discuss until the bus comes. You chat and laugh about it while you wait. Wouldn’t it be great if life were like that?

Liverpool is proud to be launching Liverpool Reads… an annual initiative. 'Holes' by Louis Sachar was chosen as the book for 2004. The choice began at grassroots with Lisa Darnborough, an English teacher at Campion Boys School, reading 'Holes' with her class. Even reluctant readers loved it. The ground swell grew rapidly within schools and libraries, culminating in a dedicated consortium committed to improving both adult and children’s literacy levels and making reading fun by Liverpool’s year as Capital of Culture in 2008.

'Holes' by Louis Sachar (published by Bloomsbury) is an international bestseller and major movie starring Sigourney Weaver and Jon Voight. 'Holes' is a story of friendship with the cleverest of plot twists, and descriptions so vivid you can feel the heat of Stanley’s desert prison burning off the page.

The city-wide initiative will be launched on September 7th, and once everyone has had the chance to get reading, the Texas-based US author Louis Sachar will be coming to Liverpool on October 11th and 12th to visit schools and libraries and read and talk about 'Holes' in the Picton Room, Liverpool Central Library on Monday 11th October at 4.30pm.

Liverpool Central Library has already had hundreds of entries for their 'Holes' children’s writing competition. Crown Street Mental Health Centre are creating artwork inspired by the book which will be displayed at the Williamson Tunnels in October. Throughout September and October actors will go into St Vincent’s School for the Blind and into Age Concern centres to read aloud from Holes.

‘I fully support the campaign for Liverpool Reads, the Bristol Reads was a great success for the people of Bristol and I hope the people of Liverpool will rally behind this great community project.’
Jimmy McGovern

‘I am an avid reader and enjoy talking about my favourite books with family and friends. I’m proud of Liverpool for embarking on Liverpool Reads…'Holes' and wish it every success.’
Cherie Booth, QC
