Tamar,
the second novel by Mal Peet, depicts the story of a young girl
attempting to discover who she is and answer questions about her
family. As well as this another tale is told, that of a Special
Operations Executive (or a spy to you and me) working in Nazi
occupied Holland and the horrors of the Second World War.
When she inherits a box from
her grandfather, Tamar begins to unravel a mysterious story and
hopes to reveal the answers to painful questions. The contents of
the box disclose that another Tamar
existed and worked in Holland
during World War Two, thus beginning an exciting quest for
knowledge.
Tamar
is a thrilling narrative exploring basic human emotions of jealousy
and love. The
descriptions of war are harrowing and emotive, especially when
placed against the modern aspects of the novel, which interweave
effortlessly. A more adult novel than his previous work Keeper, Tamar
has the power to enthral all ages and won the Carnegie Medal.
