The idea for a city-wide read started in Campion C. High School in 2004, taking its lead from interest generated in other citywide reads such as the one running annually in Bristol. Liverpool Reads is now in its second year after being created by a number of Liverpool-based organisations such as the The Reader Office, Bluecoat Arts Centre, the Library Service, Liverpool's Education Department and Excellence in Liverpool. It is hoped that the initiative will run for a further 4 years up to and including 2008, the city's year as European Capital of Culture.
Each year Liverpool Reads promotes events and reading based activities around a chosen title. For 2005 the chosen book is
'Millions' by Frank Cottrell Boyce. Interest is building for this year's read with groups of young people, schools, libraries, prisons and footballers showing their enthusiasm for reading and for getting involved in ongoing activities.
